Sophie Glenn Lau ’88 Named Lincoln’s Next Head of School

Please read the letter below from Lincoln School Head of School Search Committee Chair Russell C. Carey P’16,’31 and Chair of the Board of Trustees Jane P. Jamieson ’71, announcing Lincoln's next head of school.

It is our great pleasure to announce that the Board of Trustees has unanimously voted to appoint Sophie Glenn Lau ’88 as Lincoln School’s 17th head of school, beginning on July 1, 2020. Sophie is currently the head of the 440-student Senior School at Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and brings with her a history of excellence in education, and a longstanding commitment to integrity, innovation, and community.

Sophie comes to Lincoln with an outstanding record of strategic thinking, experience in developing and launching programs and partnerships, and a deep dedication to students.

“Sophie is the right choice to lead Lincoln at this exciting point in school history,” said Russell C. Carey P’16,’31, Chair of the Lincoln Head of School Search Committee. “She is an accomplished and dynamic leader who will build on Lincoln’s recent successes, including our award-winning STEAM Hub for Girls, our innovative partnership programs, and the expansion of our Little and Lower schools. Her experience in these areas paired with both her strategic approach and passion for learning will shape Lincoln’s future for years to come.”

Shady Side is a leading independent school for PreK–Grade 12 boys and girls, set on four divisional campuses in the greater Pittsburgh area, that emphasizes hands-on learning, student leadership, STEAM, and much more. In Sophie’s tenure at Shady Side, she facilitated students in a global service program, increased their boarding program by 38% over five years, was part of the team behind the 22,000-square-foot Mcllroy Center for Science and Innovation and led the design and construction of the 12,000-square-foot Glimcher Tech and Design Hub, among her many accomplishments. She is devoted to equity and inclusion, having advocated for and worked in close partnership with Shady Side’s Director of Equity, Inclusion, and Community Relations. Sophie looks forward to serving the needs of Lincoln’s diverse student and parent community, and championing a more diverse faculty and staff.

Sophie also has the remarkable distinction of having graduated from Lincoln in 1988, after which she graduated from Princeton University in 1992, and subsequently received her master’s degree in history from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. While at Princeton, Sophie was captain of the varsity women’s crew team, a First Team All-Ivy member, and the recipient of the Carol P. Brown Award for dedication and perseverance in the pursuit of excellence. Sophie taught at The Groton School, Tabor Academy, and The Pingry School, before joining The Wheeler School in 2002. In her 12 years there she served as a history teacher, the History Department Chair, and the Technology Integrationist. Her two children, Emmie and Thompson, attended Lincoln’s Little School, and her husband Peter was a teacher at Lincoln from 2003 to 2007. She is thrilled to return to her roots in Rhode Island, where she was born and grew up, and where her daughter is currently a first-year student at Brown University.

“I am honored to have been selected as Lincoln’s next head of school,” said Sophie. "As a student, Lincoln was where I found my voice and learned how to be a leader. As an alumna, I have watched Lincoln’s incredible trajectory with a great sense of pride and enthusiasm. I now look forward to building on that momentum as head of Lincoln School, and to championing the power of an all-girls education on a national scale.”

Sophie’s appointment as our next head of school is the culmination of a six-month national search, representing the hard work of the Search Committee, which included:

  • Martha Boss Bennett ’85, P’14,’16,’22, Trustee, Past Board President
  • Susan Farnum P’26,’28, Director of Admission and Financial Aid

  • Jai-Me McCann Potter Rutledge ’06, P’31, Trustee
  • Emma Stenberg, Faculty, Upper School, English Department Head
  • Nancy Nahigian Tavitian ’82, Trustee, Vice President

In addition, we are thankful for the dedication, time, and insight of the trustees, faculty, staff, alumnae, and volunteers who assisted throughout this process.

“Sophie rose to the top of a pool of exceptionally talented applicants. Her professional accomplishments and personal attributes are incredibly compelling, and she will be a great asset to our students,” said Chair of the Lincoln Board of Trustees Jane Jamieson ’71. “This also marks the first time in Lincoln’s 135-year history that an alumna will be at the helm. We are so excited to see all the ways in which our community grows and strengthens under Sophie’s leadership.”

We extend our sincere and heartfelt thanks to Suzanne Fogarty for her vision and hard work since she joined Lincoln as head of school in 2014. We look forward to welcoming Sophie to campus in the spring to meet with the community and work with school leadership to ensure a seamless transition.

Finally, thanks to all of you for your support of Lincoln and your partnership throughout this process. Please join us in welcoming Sophie Glenn Lau ’88 back to the Lincoln community as our next head of school!
