Lincoln Middle School Robotics Team Advances to State Finals

Susan Amsler-Akacem, the Robotics team coach and Lincoln's Ed. Tech Department Head & Technology Innovator, shares some details from this weekend's First Lego League Robotics Qualifying Tournament!

This weekend was a very exciting one for 10 Middle School girls representing Lincoln School at the First Lego League Robotics Qualifying Tournament at Gordon School! The Irrigation Nation team, inspired by the Hydro Dynamics theme of this year's competition, arrived bright and early to get set up and ready for their judging sessions at 8 a.m.

First they showcased their bot building and coding skills for the judges, who stated the Lincoln bot was the smoothest scoring bot they had seen. Next they moved to their project presentation where the team explained how they researched and examined the problem of overwatering irrigation farmlands. Their solution included a prototype of a water pump that would take excess water from underground back up into the sprinkler system for the water to be reused.

Immediately following their presentation, they moved on to the core values and team building judging. They were given three minutes to complete a task together, showing their off their skills in real time to the judges who were very impressed with their great team work and awesome Lincoln spirit.

Next stop: the robot games! The girls stayed positive all day long and felt both prepared and excited. There were three 2-minute sessions during which they put their robot to the task of accomplishing the mission board. Their scores and spirits were high!

The day ended with closing ceremonies—the girls were awarded a certificate and invitation to the Rhode Island State Robotics tournament at Roger Williams University on January 13th. They were one of only nine teams to move forward to the next round!

These 10 amazing girls had a wonderful energy about them all day and kept their teamwork in tact for the duration. They could not be more thrilled to move forward and are working hard to have everything ready for the state tournament January. Stay tuned for more news from Irrigation Nation!
