Lincoln School Launches 3rd Year of Orthopedics in Action with University Orthopedics

Lincoln School is excited to enter its third year of partnership with University Orthopedics, a Rhode Island-based orthopedic care facility, to offer the Orthopedics in Action program to students. This eight-week program provides students with a hands-on, STEAM-focused curriculum, featuring real-world challenges inspired by orthopedic surgery and biomedical engineering. The program is based on the Orthopedics in Action curriculum developed by The Perry Initiative.

Orthopedic medicine is a field where women have historically been underrepresented, with less than 8% of orthopedic surgeons identifying as female. At Lincoln, we are committed to supporting and advancing young women in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics). Programs like Orthopedics in Action aim to inspire more students to explore fields in which women are typically underrepresented, helping to foster both interest and confidence for further study.

Open to students in Grades 9–12, along with participants from another high school in Providence, the program introduces students to real-life orthopedic challenges. Each session, taught by orthopedic physicians and medical students, includes lectures, hands-on activities, and written discussions. Students will engage in activities such as investigating knee anatomy, designing and repairing injuries, and diagnosing conditions like scoliosis and fractures.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will earn credit that appears on their Lincoln School transcript.
