RISD: Introduction to Architecture

Partnership program and Rhode Island School of Design
In this partnership between Lincoln School and RISD, the Making Space: An Introduction to Architecture course serves as a foundational studio course for Lincoln School students (grades 10-12) who are interested in architecture and related fields. The course introduces students to foundational design principles and techniques, including hand-drawing, collaging, model-making, and fabrication. The course will ask students to reconsider space through a series of lectures, workshops, and assignments that emphasize creative problem-solving, design thinking, and critical engagement with the built environment. Practically, students will develop valuable skills in design representation and design making. Theoretically, students will develop a critical eye towards the built environment.
The ultimate goal of the course is to frame architectural making and design processes in the broader context of students’ individual areas of interest. Upon completion of the course, students will understand how to advance their personal ideas and creative practices through architectural methods.
The course takes place at the RISD School of Architecture building and studios, and is taught by RISD architecture faculty and graduate students. The course is credit-bearing and will appear on the Lincoln student’s transcript. The culmination of the course is a showcase where students will share their semester’s work with their professors, faculty members, and family.
