Orthopedics in Action

Partnership program and University Orthopedics

Offered in our Upper School Division, Grades 9-12

This semester program provides Lincoln Upper School students the opportunity to participate in a unique, hands-on curriculum that features real-world challenges from orthopedic surgery and biomedical engineering. Now in its 4th year, the Orthopedic in Action (OIA) program- taught by physicians and medical team from University Orthopedics- is built on the Orthopedics In Action curriculum designed by The Perry Initiative.

Through the course of the semester, students investigate knee anatomy and function, design and repair injuries, and diagnose scoliosis and bone fractures. The girls also have the opportunity to work side by side with women surgeons and medical students to learn about their educational paths to the field of orthopedics.  Historically, women have been underrepresented in orthopedic medicine. This credit-earning course is aimed at increasing interest and aptitude for further study in the orthopedic field.

The culmination of the program is a Final Showcase where students demonstrate what lessons and procedures they have learned throughout the semester.

Anabel S, '24 initiated Orthopedics in Action

Spearheaded by a Lincoln Student

Anabel S., '24 spearheaded efforts to bring the program to Lincoln School. Along with her father, who is a surgeon at University Orthopedics, Anabel initiated the program to challenge the gender disparity in orthopedic surgery.

"[Girls] learn that they have the ability to do anything, such as becoming an orthopedic surgeon, by seeing people who look like them become successful in their positions. If we can give access to seeing things like this at an early age or during early education, we are encouraging and promoting following your dreams to achieve the future."

Lincoln School is extremely grateful for the local interest and excited about growing this program to benefit our students and those across Rhode island.
