Lower School

3 years—Grade 5

Lower Schoolers at Lincoln eagerly explore, question, and reflect. They might collect and examine sea life along the shores of Narragansett Bay, or problem-solve through a engineering design challenge. Later, they might analyze issues of social justice, hearing from a Holocaust survivor as a guest speaker. Experiences like these create critical and passionate thinkers who possess solid foundational skills. Our students learn to face and embrace problems, to be leaders, and to act as caring and cooperative classmates.

Along the way, we support children's needs and encourage their strengths by getting to know them as individuals and partnering with their parents. We celebrate their accomplishments through school-wide gatherings, fostering a sense of community and pride. Our ultimate goal is to help students become engaged, enthusiastic, and confident learners.

Early Childhood
Nursery: Oak Room
Pre-Kindergarten: Ginkgo Room

The Early Childhood program consists of two co-ed classrooms: the Oak room for three- and four-year-olds, and the Ginkgo room for four- and five-year-olds. Our approach is influenced by the internationally renowned Reggio Emilia concept of early childhood teaching and learning. Through an evolving, emergent curriculum shaped by each child’s cognitive social and physical development, children come to view school as a place of exploration and discovery.

Kindergarten–Grade 5

The Academic Program in Kindergarten through Grade 5 engages girls in active exploration of the world around them. Our curriculum is designed to reflect their interests and broaden their experiences. As they ask questions and seek answers, they are encouraged to see themselves as life-long learners.

Life Sized Whale Visits Lincoln School

The Lower School and Early Childhood students at Lincoln had an opportunity to see - and go inside of - a life sized whale last week! The Audubon Society visited us for two days and did a combination of storytelling, hands on demonstrations of how whales eat, a session on the bone structure of the whale and it’s main features, and a tour through the inside of the whale to see the size of it’s spine and rib bones in addition to other anatomy.

Grade 2 Learns Taiko Drumming

As part of their study of Japanese culture in Social Studies, Grade 2 participated in a special workshop with a Taiko drumming ensemble, Gendo Taiko. This group, made up of students from Brown and RISD, is centered around celebrating diasporic Asian identities. Lincoln students learned the basics of drumming, and were able to learn and practice the group’s greeting song. At the end, they were treated to a short performance by the group, showcasing a second style of drumming.

Reading Graphic Novels in Lower School

While students are book shopping in the Lower School Library, one will often hear, “Mrs. Lenihan, do you have any new graphic novels? Do you have a graphic novel that you would recommend for me to read?” Students love to read graphic novels! The tasks and thinking skills required to read a multimodal text require a high level of visual literacy as well as critical and inferential thinking.

Connecting with Schools Around the World

Did you know that there are schools just like Lincoln around the world? Luckily for us, we have the opportunity to get to know the students from two of them! During the fall, Grade 2 students take a deep dive into Quakerism and what it means to be a Quaker school. As a part of that learning exploration, we were recently able to reconnect with the Friends Girls Junior & Senior School (Friends) in Japan and The Mount School York (Mount) in England. Both are girls' schools, too.
