This course is an overview of Arabic geography and culture with a special emphasis on the sounds and scripts of the alphabet. In addition, basic grammar and vocabulary are consistently interwoven with the major cultural themes. Individual and collaborative activities and projects are designed to provide ample opportunity for the students to develop and use the language creatively and personally. Evaluation of student performance is based on participation in the classroom and on frequent oral and written testing throughout the year.
Syllabus and Course Outline
All units include listening, speaking, reading and writing practice, as well as vocabulary, grammar and cultural discussion.
Unit 1 – introduction to Arabic world, alphabet I, saying hello, Arabic dialects
Unit 2 - alphabet II, cultural issues, greetings, saying goodbye
Unit 3 – alphabet III, meeting and greeting people
Unit 4- alphabet IV, gender agreement
Unit 5- alphabet V, forms of address
Unit 6- alphabet VI, cultural issues, masculine/feminine
Unit 7- alphabet VII, numbers and numerals, cultural issues
Unit 8- alphabet VIII, cultural issues-familiar expressions
Unit 9- alphabet IX, culture- visiting people
Unit 10- alphabet X, writing, justification of margins, handwriting, culture- development
of writing system
