Lincoln Goes to Washington

By Beatrice Swift, Upper School English Department Head

Lincoln School was well represented at the National Conference on Girls’ Education in Washington, D.C. on February 10-12. The conference was co-sponsored by the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools (NCGS) and the Young Women’s Leadership Network, bringing together educators in private and public girls’ schools across the country.

Head of School Julia Russell Eells (an NCGS Board member) along with English and History Department Heads Beatrice Swift and Ruth Marris-Macaulay, attended sessions with educators from around the country on topics in girls’ education including leadership development and mentoring, global issues and curricula, technological innovation, mindfulness, and teaching teachers.

A highlight of the conference was an inspiring keynote address by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), who drew on her own experience in an independent girls’ school and focused on women’s leadership and current education initiatives in Congress. Following the Senator’s keynote address, Lincoln hosted a reception for nine alumnae attendees and guests who attended the Senator’s speech, including Mary Cannell Andrews '50 and her daughter Sarah Andrews, Suzanne Hayes '87, Rebekah Holman '87, Sarah Hull '97, Arlene Tate Schuler '72,  and Judy Rice Vandegriff '50.
