One of the most exciting days in fifth grade is the Rooster Games. The Rooster Games take place on a school day during the winter at the Wheeler School. Fifth grade students from Wheeler and Hamilton School, Sophia Academy and Lincoln School participate in a variety of games and fun activities that test their knowledge of the twenty books nominated for the Rhode Island Children’s Book Award.
In order to participate in this special event, the fifth graders at Lincoln School are required to do the following:
¨ Complete their summer reading assignment: Read both The Great Wall of Lucy Wu by Wendy Wan Long Shang and When Life Gives You O.J. by Erica S. Perl and complete a Rooster Game card on each of them.
¨ Read at least 8 other Rooster Game books (not including the books read in class or in Library) and complete Rooster Game cards for each of them. A list of Rooster Game books is attached.
The Rooster Game cards should be completed on a 5” x 8” index card (available in the Grade Five classroom). The lined side should include:
¨ The title of the book
¨ The author’s name
¨ A list of the main characters
¨ 5 important items from the book listed with an explanation of their significance
¨ A summary of the book
The blank side of the card should have a drawing from a scene in the book that is colored and explained in 1-2 sentences at the bottom of the card. You may use two index cards if necessary.
The Rooster Game card due dates will be assigned in September.
