Communication
We are happy to talk informally at the beginning or end of the day about changes in routine or circumstances that might affect your child's behavior.  There will be a notebook available in the classrooms so that you can write down any changes in your child's daily routine.  This will help us to prepare smoother transitions for your child.

Each child will have a mailbox in the classroom that you should check on a regular basis for school notices. Weekly class newsletters will posted on the classroom websites.

We suggest that children bring a backpack to and from school each day.  This helps with organization and assures that artwork and personal belongings make it home safely. Class notices can often be found tucked away somewhere in the backpack so please go through it on a regular basis.

During the year, we have two scheduled conferences to talk about your child's school experience.  There will be no school for children on these days.

Friday Morning Silent Meeting
On Friday mornings the Oak and Ginkgo children gather in the studio for a silent meeting.  This is a developmentally appropriate introduction to the Quaker tradition of meeting where we sing and celebrate being together.  Parents who are able are welcome to join us on any Friday.

Another aspect of these meetings is the celebration of birthdays.  Each child is assigned to a Friday during the year when his or her birthday will be celebrated.  For some children this is a half-birthday celebration.  During the week preceding, the children work on a simple gift for the birthday child to be presented during the meeting.  We also invite the parents of the birthday child to attend the meeting and share a short story about the birthday child.  These events are very special and the children look forward to them with excitement and anticipation.  A schedule of birthday celebrations will be handed out at orientation.

Morning Snack
A morning snack will be provided each day.  If your child has allergies we would be happy to discuss the snacks we serve or you may choose to provide your child with a snack from home.

What Your Child Needs

For all children . . .
Clothing:  We often play with "messy" materials. We don't want the children to worry about fancy clothes that can't get dirty.  Please encourage your children to wear play clothes that can "take a beating!"

Gym Sneakers: An extra set of sneakers will be kept at the gym for physical education classes.  The gym teachers would prefer Velcro closings, and no high tops.  They should be clearly labeled with your child's name.  If your child is in the Oak Room and will be attending school three days a week please wait to make sure your child will be attending gym class before purchasing an extra pair.

An Extra Set of Clothes: A small shoebox with your child's name on it containing an extra set of clothes will be kept in our classroom in case of accidents.  This should include a top, a bottom, socks, and underwear.  Each item of clothing should be clearly marked with your child's name.  We often play with water and messy materials so there will be many opportunities for these clothes to be used.

Lunch: Please pack a healthy lunch including a beverage. It is also helpful to include any utensils that your child may need.  Unfortunately, we are not able to refrigerate or microwave lunches.
LINCOLN SCHOOL IS A PEANUT FREE SCHOOL.  No peanut butter products may be included in your child's lunch.

If your child is staying FULL days...
Resting Materials: After lunch we rest.  For some children this is a time to sleep.  For others, it is a time of quiet reflection.  We feel that it is important for all children to have this time of calm in the middle of an otherwise busy day.  In order to help make this a peaceful and comfortable time for your child, we ask that you provide them with a cozy blanket and a small pillow to be stored at school.  In addition, children may bring one "snuggly" (a stuffed animal or such) to accompany them during rest.  Again, resting materials should be clearly marked with your child's name.

For children staying for Extended Day . . .
Please send your child with a healthy snack to be eaten at the beginning of extended day.  Any other questions about extended day should be directed to Ellen Lough, Director of Extended Day at 331-9696 or at elough@lincolnschool.org. Extended day is only available to those children who attend full day programs.

Early Morning Care and Drop Off
The teachers will be ready to greet children at 7:55 AM each morning.  Though teachers may be in their classrooms before 8:00, this is valuable time for us to prepare for the day.  We ask that if you need to drop your child off before 8:00, you use early morning daycare, which begins at 7:30 AM in the Lower School library.

*The time between 8:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. is an important transition time for children when they can connect with their teachers and peers and ready themselves for the day.  We would like to start our day promptly at 8:30.   We encourage you to make use of this time to allow for a smooth transition perhaps reading a book or doing a puzzle with your child.

Afternoon Pickup
Children attending school for a half-day should be picked up at 12:30 PM at the red doors in front of the Lower School.
Children attending school for the full-day should be picked up at 2:45 at the wall.  You will receive information about the procedure and traffic pattern for pick up in a later mailing.

Birthdays
As part of the Early Childhood curriculum, we will be recognizing and celebrating all children's birthdays at school.  In order to respect all children's feelings, we ask that you restrict conversations about non-school birthday celebrations to outside of school.  Please do not bring party invitations or gifts to school.  Thank you for your understanding on this matter.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO A WONDERFUL YEAR TOGETHER!!
