Visual Arts

Lincoln’s robust Visual Arts program provides students with skills and concepts that challenge their visual thinking processes, develop their visual communication skills, and encourage inventive responses to visual problems. The art curriculum is developmental in nature, building on skills and concepts with increasing sophistication from Nursery through Grade 12. Students experience a wide variety of media, including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, collage, photography, woodworking, and ceramics. Each spring we have a schoolwide art show displaying works by each student in the school.

Nursery, Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten

In our Reggio Emilia-inspired Early Childhood program, children visit the Studio classroom on a regular basis in small groups to explore materials that range from found objects from the natural world to wire, clay, fiber, wood, paint and anything else of interest to the children. As they're exposed to new materials, children learn to investigate, create, and explore in an increasingly sophisticated manner.


Lower School

In the Lower School, students continue to explore the physical world around them and expand their knowledge of world cultures and art history. Throughout the curriculum, students may make puppets of Greek gods and goddess, draw insects and paint on silk, or work on a mural for a community celebration. Students build analytical skills through discussion of art works and learn respect for the ideas and opinions of others. Visiting artists and trips to RISD enhance and support a lifelong interest in art.


Middle School

The Middle School art curriculum combines art history with the principles and elements of design, teaching students how art and artists have reflected the culture and technology of every past era, and developing the students' own skills and creativity for self-expression. Visual Arts also cross the curriculum: During their art classes, students create set design and costumes with the Performing Arts Department and create Calder-inspired endangered species mobiles with the Science Department.


Upper School

In the Upper School, students are exposed to a wide selection of required and elective courses in art. Aesthetic awareness, art appreciation, and media exploration are experienced through ceramics, drawing, photography, sculpture, and painting. Assessment is largely portfolio-based, and many seniors submit a portfolio as either a supplement to, or in the case of art or architecture applicants, a requirement for their college applications. For students with a very special interest in the Visual Arts, an Art Major is offered during Junior and Senior year. This specialized program was created to give girls the necessary time and instruction to perfect the technical skills required for the formation of a successful college application portfolio.
